truth
what is truth? is it the word spoken by others? It's easy to swayed in today's world.
But to be clear, truth is the reality that we experience. That is the one truth we can truly know. Why should we believe something about someone else based on another's account or bias? That is their reality and perception of the situation, filled with their own bias. To truly know someone, you simply speak with them directly. Ask - if you are uncertain, but never assume. Seek to see the best in others unless proven otherwise by your own experience.
For example, if the internet told you butterflies bite, but you lived your entire life without a butterfly biting you. In fact, you've held butterflies before and they were always friendly... would you deny your own reality to believe the account of someone else?
In the same way, why should you deny your own perception of someone (your own reality from lived experiences)? Why deny it to believe the interpretation of someone else's bias? Rumor and gossip are fickle things. I will never let gossip sway my opinion of anyone, especially if my interaction with them has been nothing less than respect and kindness. Strive to see the best and the beautiful in the world.
